Scalability
- Ion 318™ Chips are now available, offering 10 times more throughput than the Ion 316™ Chips that were released in July 2011. At 200 base reads, the Ion 318™ Chips are expected to deliver up to 1 Gb of sequence output and will continue to scale with paired-end sequencing runs and 400 base reads. The Ion 314™ Chips, Ion 316™ Chips, and Ion 318™ Chips all work on the same Ion PGM™ Sequencer, giving scientists the flexibility to match a Chip with the output and price that best fits their research needs.

Targeted Amplicon Sequencing
- The release of the Ion AmpliSeq™ Cancer Panel in October 2011, along with Developers Access to the Ion AmpliSeq™ Custom System via the Ion Community, helped the Ion PGM™ Sequencer to deliver simple, single-tube, ultrahigh multiplex PCR for hundreds of amplicons with 90-minute sequencing run times. Expanding on this revolutionary technology, additional fixed content panels and custom content systems will be made available in Q1, 2012.

Accessibility
With economies of scale in semiconductor sequencing technology, price reductions make using the Ion PGM™ Sequencer even more accessible. A reduction in the price of the Ion 316™ chip by over 40% will make projects of any scale more affordable and more accessible. Also available is the Ion PGM™ Torrent Server EL, a lower-cost server priced 40% less than the current Ion PGM™ Torrent Server. This new server is perfect for those who want to run a single Ion PGM™ Sequencer in their laboratory.

Paired-end Sequencing
- Ion paired-end sequencing (PES) protocols for sequencing of 2 x 100 base reads nearly doubles the sequence output per chip and increases accuracy across the read. PES is ideal for improving de novo assembly, increasing the accuracy of sequencing, and identifying genomic and transcriptional variation. The PES protocol will be extended in Q2 2012 with the release of a 2 x 200 base paired-end sequencing kit.
